She sacrificed everything for her future. Decades later, she was taken to a place she never dreamed of.

She sacrificed everything for her future. Decades later, she was taken to a place she never dreamed of.

The word seemed enormous. Expensive. Distant.

“A pilot, son?” she asked quietly.

“Yes. I want to fly on big planes… the ones that take off from Mexico City.”

She smiled, though fear gripped her chest.

“So you will fly,” she said. “And I will help you.”

She already knew that flight school cost more than she could have imagined.

When both boys graduated from high school and were accepted into the aviation academy, Teresa made the hardest decision of her life.

She sold the house.

She sold the land.

She sold the last tangible memory of her husband.

“Where will we live?” Paolo asked quietly.

She took a deep breath.

“Wherever we have to, as long as you study.”

They moved into a small, rented room near the market. The bathroom was shared with other families. The roof leaked during heavy rains.

Teresa washed her neighbors’ clothes. She cleaned houses in wealthier neighborhoods. She continued selling tamales. She sewed until late at night.

Her hands were cracking. Her back ached constantly.

But she never allowed her children to think about giving up.

A FEW YEARS AHEAD

Marco finished first. Paolo followed shortly after.

But becoming a commercial pilot required hours of flying, certifications and endless training.

Finally, an opportunity arose… abroad.

At the airport in Mexico, they hugged their mother tightly.

“We will be back,” Marco promised.

“When we do this, you will be the first person on our plane,” Paolo added.

Teresa smiled through her tears.

Don’t worry about me. Take care.

And then the waiting began.

Twenty years.
