Captain Dorian Rourke followed her inside. Although he was not of the class, he insisted on accompanying her.

“People should know who protected them,” he said earlier that evening.

Brennan, Sawyer, Callum, and Lyle gathered together, panic written all over their faces.

Their plan to humiliate her backfired violently.

Sawyer muttered, “It wasn’t supposed to be like this.”

“No,” Brennan snapped. “She wasn’t supposed to show up like that.”

As Elara came closer, whispers rolled through the room:

“She’s a Navy officer?”

“Did she fly combat missions?”

“She saved twelve Marines?”

“What were we doing while she risked her life?”

Elara stopped in the center of the room, letting the silence settle before she spoke.

“I saw your emails,” she said calmly. “The ones where you were planning your little performance today.

I came because I wanted to see if anything had changed in ten years.”

The four men stiffened. Several of the guests looked at them with disgust.

“I learned something,” Elara continued. “The people who taught me resilience weren’t the Marines I pulled out of danger.

These weren’t the officers who trained me. These were the ones who made me feel small when I had nothing to defend myself with.”

The room received her words with a heavy sense of guilt.

Captain Rourke stepped forward. “Lieutenant Commander Whitmore conducted one of the most difficult rescue missions in recent Navy history.

During six hours of relentless shelling in Yemen, she flew back and forth into the kill zone to evacuate Marines trapped behind enemy lines.”

Another veteran at the bar saluted her. Others followed suit.

Elara returned the salute humbly. However, she hadn’t forgotten why she was here.

She turned back to the four ringleaders. “You invited me here to laugh at me.
