Not because Daniel was a coward.

Because she had carried the silence, and she knew where its bones lay buried.

She told them Daniel was not just the man fixing the house.

She told them he was her son.

She told them he was their father, and he had not known they existed when he left nine years ago.

She told them she had been wrong to keep it from all of them as long as she had.

Then she stopped.

The room held its breath.

Michelle looked at Daniel with an expression so sharp it almost felt adult.

“You didn’t know?”

“No,” Daniel said. “I didn’t.”

“Would you have left if you had?”

He answered at once. “No.”

That, at least, he knew with brutal certainty.

Michelle studied him.

Then she asked the question Daniel had feared from the moment he read Michael’s birth certificate.

“Are you going to leave again?”

He held her gaze.

“No.”

She searched his face for a long time.

Then, in a smaller voice, she asked, “Promise?”

Daniel felt his chest tighten. “I promise.”

She nodded once, but did not smile.

Michael had said nothing.

Daniel turned to him.

Michael looked back, that same careful gaze, but now there was hurt in it too. Not loud hurt. Quiet hurt. The kind that had had years to settle.

“I’m sorry,” Daniel said.

Michael’s fingers tightened on the notebook. “For not knowing, or for not being here?”

The question was so precise it took the air out of the room.

“For both.”

Michael looked down. Opened the notebook. Tore out a page. Held it out.

Daniel took it.
