Two days later, the truth found him before she did.

It happened in the kitchen, in the most ordinary way possible, which was fitting. Disaster rarely announced itself with violins. It preferred linoleum and gravity.

Margaret had gone to refill her prescription. Daniel was replacing a loose cabinet hinge. Michael and Michelle were at the table doing homework, which in Michelle’s case meant reading aloud and objecting to several sentences per page. Michael did math faster than most adults Daniel knew and spent the extra time sketching machinery in the margins.

Michelle reached across the table for a calculator.

Her notebook slid off her lap and burst open on the floor.

Papers fanned everywhere.

Daniel crouched automatically to help.

He picked up a worksheet. A spelling quiz. A permission slip. Then a folded document with an official seal at the top.

He almost handed it back unseen.

Then the surname caught his eye.

Michael Harper.

He unfolded it.

Birth Certificate.

Child: Michael Daniel Harper.

Mother: Emily Rose Harper.

Father: blank.

Daniel’s vision sharpened so violently the room seemed to tilt into focus. Every letter on the paper stood out with cruel precision.

Michael.

Daniel.

Harper.

He read it again.

Then again.

His fingers tightened on the page.

“Is that important?” Michelle asked.

Her voice sounded miles away.

Daniel lifted his head.

Michael was watching him now. Not panicked. Not confused. Just watching, the same grave, careful gaze Daniel had noticed from the first second at the door.

“Where did you get this?” Daniel asked.

Michelle shrugged. “Grandma keeps all our papers in the green folder.”

He looked at Michael.

Michael said quietly, “You already know, don’t you?”

The question hit harder than any accusation could have.
