Grace? She laughed.

Not loudly. Not mockingly. Just a small, knowing laugh that made the boys pause.

“Well,” she said through the glass door, knocking once, “I hope one of you knows how to cook dinner, because I’m the only one who does.”

There was a long silence.

Then the curtain twitched.

A minute later, Oliver opened the door.

Strike one: failed.

Inside, Grace stepped in like nothing had happened. She grabbed a mop and cleaned the juice without a word of complaint. But then she did something unexpected—she handed Liam the mop.

“You made the mess. You help fix it.”

“No,” he said immediately, crossing his arms.

Grace tilted her head. “Okay. Then no dessert tonight.”

“We don’t care,” Noah shot back.

Grace smiled slightly. “That’s fine. I’ll still make dessert. Just not for you.”

That got their attention.

Strike two: complicated.

By lunchtime, the boys had escalated. They smeared peanut butter on the walls, turned on every TV in the house at full volume, and even released the neighbor’s small dog into the mansion after sneaking out.

Grace didn’t yell. She didn’t threaten.
