Heavy.
Uncomfortable.
Real.
When it was her turn, Nneoma stepped forward slowly.
Tears streamed down her face.
“I’m not a monster,” she said weakly. “I’m a mother.”
A murmur spread across the courtroom.
“My son was dying. No donor. No hope…” she continued. “I was desperate.”
She turned toward Miriam.
“I didn’t want Samuel to die… I just… I didn’t know what else to do…”
Miriam’s face didn’t move.
Not even a flicker of sympathy.
“You’re right,” Miriam said calmly.
Nneoma’s eyes lit up for a second—
Until Miriam continued.
“You are a mother.”
A pause.
Then—
“But you stopped being human the moment you chose one child’s life over another.”
The room went silent again.
Even the judge leaned forward slightly.
The judge adjusted her glasses.
Her voice was firm. Final.
“This court has heard enough.”
She looked directly at Nneoma and her husband.
“What you planned… what you almost did… is beyond cruelty.”
A breath.
A pause.
Then—
“Guilty on all counts.”
A wave of emotion swept through the courtroom.
Nneoma collapsed to her knees.
“No… please… my son—!”
But the judge continued.
“You will serve life imprisonment.”
Her husband received the same.
The gavel struck.
BANG.
And just like that—
It was over.
Weeks later…
Miriam sat beside Samuel in the hospital garden.
The sun was warm. The air calm.
For the first time in a long time—
There was peace.
Samuel laughed softly, playing with a small toy car.
“Mummy, I’m strong, right?” he asked.
Miriam smiled, brushing his hair gently.
“The strongest.”
Just then—
The doctor approached.
“Good afternoon,” he said quietly.
Miriam’s smile faded slightly.
“What is it?” she asked.
The doctor hesitated.
“There’s something you need to know…”
