Not well. Not perfectly. But standing.

Emiliano gritted his teeth, his legs trembling like twigs in the wind. He took a step. Then another.

“That’s it, my champion…” Marisol whispered, her voice firm yet gentle. “There’s no ‘I can’t’ here. There’s ‘again.'”

Nico let out a little laugh, that laugh Gael hadn’t heard since before the accident. She perked up at the sight of her brother and wobbled forward, like a little warrior defying gravity with sheer willpower.

One, two, three steps.

The children ran into Marisol’s arms. She hugged them as if they were her own, kissing their heads, and the three of them gently fell to the grass, a jumble of laughter, tears, and yellow gloves.

“They did it…” Marisol sobbed, clutching them to her chest. “My brave ones… they did it.”

The car keys slipped from Gael’s fingers and fell to the ground with an obscenely loud clang. The sound broke the spell.

Marisol looked up abruptly. When she saw him, fear crossed her face like a shadow. Then—as if the same emotion gave her courage—that fear transformed into something harder: a maternal, protective pride.

Gael tried to speak. He wanted to say, “You’re fired.” But the words wouldn’t come. She stared at her children’s little legs, kicking happily in the air, as if the world had just changed without her permission.

“How…?” Her voice came out hoarse, broken. “How is this possible?”
