“The ring,” Eugenia insisted, desperate to regain control. “Check her bag! It’s in there. I swear.”

Gael walked to the garden bench where Marisol’s worn cloth bag lay. He picked it up. It was light, unassuming. He reached inside… and touched cold metal.

She pulled out the emerald ring.

Eugenia smiled, triumphant.

“See? I told you. She’s a thief.”

Marisol’s voice trailed off, trembling.

“I don’t… I don’t know how it got there…”

Gael held the ring aloft and turned it to watch the light shatter against the green. Then he looked at Eugenia with a chilling calm.

“You’re right, Auntie. The ring is here.”

Eugenia’s smile widened.

“Then do what you have to—”

“But something doesn’t add up,” Gael interrupted, his voice icy. “Marisol’s been in the garden with my children since three o’clock. The cameras recorded it. And you… you called me at four saying you’d just discovered her.”

Eugenia swallowed hard.

“I…”

“The safe in the office sends a notification when it’s opened,” Gael continued, his voice still low. At 3:30, I received an alert: “Box opened with user code: Eugenia Serrano.”

Eugenia stopped breathing.

“Explain to me,” Gael took a step toward her, “how did the ring get from the box you opened… into the purse of a woman who was in the garden teaching my children to walk?”

Eugenia opened her mouth. Nothing came out. Only silent rage.

Gael bent down and picked up the papers she had dropped. He read the letterhead: Sangallen Institute, Switzerland. “Indefinite stay. Minimal contact. Quarterly supervised visits.”

The world went dark.
