I Married My Friend’s Wealthy Grandfather for His Inheritance

“A settlement,” he clarified.
“You walk away from the company. Keep the foundation. Keep your image. Everyone wins.”

I almost laughed.

Almost.

“You tried to have your own father declared incompetent,” I said calmly.
“You stole from him. You waited for him to die.”

His jaw tightened.

“And now you want to negotiate?”

For a moment… the mask slipped.

There it was.

The real Daniel.

“You think you’re different?” he snapped.
“You married him for money.”

I held his gaze.

“No,” I said quietly.
“I married him because I had nothing.”

Silence.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

True.

“And now?” he asked.

I leaned forward just enough.

“Now I have everything you tried to take.”

He stared at me.

Really stared this time.

Like he was seeing me clearly for the first time.

“This isn’t over,” he said finally.

I stood.

“It is for me.”

I walked out without looking back.

And that… was the moment I knew.

I wasn’t surviving anymore.

I was in control.

Later that night, there was a knock on my door.

Soft. Hesitant.

Violet.

“I heard about Daniel,” she said as soon as I opened it.

“Of course you did.”

She gave a small, sad smile. “News travels fast in families like this.”

We stood there for a moment.

Not enemies.

Not what we used to be either.

Something in between.

“I miss you,” she said quietly.

That one… hurt.

More than Daniel.
More than the whispers.

Because this was real.

“I miss who we were,” I admitted.

Her eyes filled.

“Me too.”

Silence again.

But softer this time.

“I’m not asking things to go back,” she said.
“I know they can’t.”

“Good,” I replied gently. “Because they won’t.”

She nodded.

“I just… want to try again. Different this time. Honest.”

I studied her.

For a long moment.

“Then we start slow,” I said.

Hope flickered across her face.

“Slow is good.”

She left not long after.

No promises.

No dramatic ending.

Just… a beginning.

That night, I stood by the window in Rick’s office.

The city stretched out below me—bright, alive, endless.

For so long, I had felt small in a world like this.

Like I didn’t belong.

Now?

I didn’t need permission.

Rick had given me security.

But everything after that…

I built myself.

And for the first time in my life…

I wasn’t afraid of being alone.

I was finally… enough.
