“What did you do?” he demanded.
No greeting.
No hesitation.
Just panic wrapped in anger.
“What do you mean?” I asked calmly.
“My cards aren’t working!” he snapped. “The valet said the company account declined. My access badge just got rejected. Even my car—”
He stopped.
Breathing hard.
—“Nneka, what is going on?”
I glanced at the twins sleeping peacefully beside me.
Small.
Warm.
Safe.
“I removed you,” I said.
Silence.
Then—
“Removed me from what?”
“Everything.”
Another pause.
Longer this time.
I could almost hear his mind scrambling to catch up.
“You’re not making sense,” he said, forcing a laugh. “You don’t have that kind of authority.”
For the first time that night—
I smiled.
“Don’t I?”
